Fall Coffee Bar Ideas and a Homemade Spiced Syrup

Fall is when a coffee bar earns its place. Warm colours, spices and a homemade syrup make the morning cup feel like a small treat. Here are simple ideas that take an afternoon and carry you from October to Thanksgiving.
Colours and textures
- Swap white mugs for cream, rust or speckled stoneware.
- Add a wooden tray or a walnut cutting board as a base.
- Use a linen or plaid cloth under the jars for texture.
Natural décor
- Mini pumpkins and gourds. Real ones soften faster in a warm kitchen, so check them weekly; faux ones last all season and can go back in the box.
- Cinnamon sticks standing in a jar, ready for stirring.
- Dried leaves or wheat stems in a small vase, away from the kettle and toaster.
A homemade spiced syrup
A spiced syrup turns ordinary coffee into a fall drink. This is a basic simple syrup with whole spices:
- Put 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar (white or brown), 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 whole cloves and a few slices of fresh ginger in a small pan.
- Bring to a simmer and stir until the sugar dissolves, then simmer gently for 5 minutes.
- Take it off the heat and let it steep as it cools, about 30 minutes.
- Strain into a clean bottle and keep it in the fridge. Use it within about two weeks, and throw it out if it turns cloudy or smells off.
Start with one or two teaspoons per cup and adjust. It is also good in tea, hot cocoa and on oatmeal.
A small menu
A card or chalkboard with two or three drinks makes the bar feel special for guests: for example "Spiced latte · Maple coffee · Chai". It also reminds you to use the syrups before they go off.
From fall to Christmas
Most of the fall coffee bar carries over. After Thanksgiving, swap pumpkins for garland, add warm fairy lights, and replace the spiced syrup with peppermint for mochas. The full guide: Christmas coffee bar ideas.
